Hi Eric,
thanks for your response and can you forward this to the mailing list
- I can't work out how to reply directly to posts on that list (it
isn't very user friendly, IMO).
Hi,

Yes, we just forgot it. Waiting, you're welcome to contribute,
defining
the content of this README, we'll have to localize after. Your
contribution will certainly be accepted.

Reading just 2 or 3 threads, it appears that it's time to find a real
solution to improve help for Mac OS X users of OpenOffice.org X11.
Looks like nor this mailing list ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), nor the URL you
gave are
adapted to help new users, and a solution has to be found.
Welcome if you want to help us.
Until a read me has been prepared, in the immediate term, I would
update the info supplied by Versiontracker.com and Macupdate.com to
strongly emphasise the need for X11 (and how to install it) before
you can use OpenOffice.org 2.0rc3 as I would guess that this is where
most Mac users are going to get their first exposure to
OpenOffice.org 2.0.

For your information, fondu is not in 2.0 ... at least in rc3 :-)
My mistake, but I am using build m133 (the version just prior to rc3
I think?, and IIRC, it either had fondu built-in, or it is because of
the reason that follows...). I also have OOo1.1.2 for X11 installed,
and because of this I also had fondu on my system before I installed
OpenOffice.org 2.0. With the m133 version of OpenOffice.org 2.0,
fondu auto-ran at initial launch and converted all the fonts that it
could convert. If that is no longer the case for the rc, then good,
but obviously there has been some intent to implement such a feature
in the past and if you continue with it for future versions, then it
will be necessary to improve the process.

No. This is not true.
It is true - all my third party fonts are installed at the system
level (/Library/Fonts) and not at the user level (~/Library/Fonts).
You have made the assumption that people only install third party
fonts at the user level which (as I provide an example of) is not
necessarily always the case.
OpenOffice.org 2.0rc3 comes *without* fondu inside. If fondu is
installed, this is because the user *already* installed it.
Supposing fondu is intalled, yes, around supplementary 140 MB of place
is needed.
As I said above, people who have used OOo1.1.2 for X11 are likely to
already have fondu installed, are they not?
Just 5 minutes ago, I have installed 2.0rc3 (en-US), to proceed
some QA
tests : the result is, when fondu is used, 470 MB max are used. Not
700MB like you wrote.
See above. For me, it is near 700MB because of my third party fonts
in the /Library/Fonts folder.
Remember OpenOffice.org is a complete office solution, and MS Office
takes a lot of place too. Currently, hard disks are very big, and this
is really not a problem, regarding everything OpenOffice.org can do.
It isn't a problem if I have been warned about it and why it is about
to happen and if I can make the choice at the first stage to run
fondu or not. You can't assume that people have enough disk space
left on their hard drives just because they are larger than they used
to be, or that they don't care about maintaining as much free space
as is possible. Also, if you read cfrees post at trinity again, he/
she was unaware why the app had suddenly grown in size. People could
be discouraged from using the app if they notice seemingly bizarre
behaviour like this (e.g. they may think it is due to a virus-like
activity).
Now, if you have fonts installed as user on your system, these
directories are not concerned, because fondu for users directories is
still not implemented. ( I mean ~/Library/Fonts )

Using fondu, fonts are extracted only in /System/Library/Fonts and
/Library/Fonts.
I guess that simple user can only install fonts in ~/Library/Fonts.
Else, if a simple User has write access is such directories, this
is not
a good thing for security reasons.
A good choice of course, but you are making the assumption I stated
above about the location of third party fonts.

Yes, good idea. About fondu, I think we'll try to invite the user to
choose
1) if he want or not use fondu at first launch
2) in which directory (with something like check boxes) he wants to
extract fonts.
This would be the ideal method. From the other threads at the list,
putting the converted fonts in plain view in a ~/Library/Application
Support/OpenOffice.org2.0/fonts folder (or one at the /Library/ level
if they wanted it that way) would be a great deal better. Being able
to pick and choose the fonts for conversion would be even better. You
could offer to convert all fonts upon initial launch, and if the user
refuses, allow them to convert the fonts they want at a later stage.
The main problem we still have about this feature, easy to
implement (I
already play with it), is how to manage localization using an
Applescript... Suggestions are welcome.
I have no knowledge of how to Applescript - I'll leave those details
to you developers ;-)
