Dear Martin and all:

I talked with ericb2 about MacOSX porting.
He asked me the status of Japanese, and suggested if things are large,
we can go a separate way (correct me if I'm wrong, ericb2).
but I don't want to.

o my wish in brief
could you please add kinput2 in extras (I'll make a cws)?
kinput2 (Kanji Input2) + MacIM (Mac Input method) like fondu.
for OOo, esp for MacOSX. it is only ~500KB, and BSD style license.
and extra patches are needed for us.

o Technical issues
We use Kanji and Hiragana, Katakana. Main concern is that number of char in
Kanji is over 10000. Apparently there aren't 10000 keys in keyboard, so we
use roma notation to input. You might know there's no Hiragana on the key
tops, so we also use translator from Alphabet to Hiragana. This part
can be done in straightforward way. But Hiragana to Kanji conversion is
much more difficult. we employ heuristics to convert.
typically we use 10M words of dictionary and wise heuristics.

Roma notation (in alphabet)-> Hiragana (can be done) -> Kanji (difficult;
large dictionary with heuristics)

To input Japanese, MacOSX provides Kotoeri, which is quite smart Hiragana
kanji translator. But we cannot use them straightforwardingly for X11.
and well known input method for X11 is kinput2, which is a utility that inputs
Japanese text in X11 application; just ask for server for translated Kanji
strings and paste it to X11 application. This is still used for many UNIX
users.
Fortunately we have a utility that bridges X11 application
and Cocoa application; MacIM.
Requiring installing patched kinput2 for MacOSX
is really tough for averaged person. and fortunately fink has it but
requiring this for novice person is also tough.

   kana-kanji conversion server
          OR
   Kotoeri(kotoeri is not an ordinal kana-kanji conversion server;
so macIM tweaks to use it, and is MacOSX only)
        +-----+
(X11) ^
+---+ | asking for Kanji strings
|OOo|<---kinput2 <----- Hiragana in roma notation
+---+

native
+---+
|Ooo| <-----kotoeri <---- hiragana in roma notation
+---+ kanji string

other issues: kinput2 is a daemon. need locale settings etc.

o political issue
we must investigate licenses of patches. currently kinput2 is not actively
maintained.

thanks,
