Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP Quick-Start Guide for OpenOffice.org 2.0
Beta

Welcome to OpenOffice.org's Quick-Start Guide for Windows
environments. Below you will find step-by-step instructions to
install OpenOffice.org version 2.0 Beta on your system. You may
want to print this instruction sheet for reference before beginning
to download and install OpenOffice.org.

Note: If you want to install a shared OpenOffice.org, to be used by
many users, you will need to read these instructions.

Note: If you will be installing OpenOffice.org on a Windows PC used
by more than one user, and you want all users to be able to use
OpenOffice.org (each user logs in separately), please see the
Quick-Start Guide for Multiple Users.

To download and install OpenOffice.org 2.0 Beta, follow this
checklist:

Print and read through these instructions.
Review the System Requirements for OpenOffice.org use.
Download OpenOffice.org 2.0 Beta
Unzipping the Downloaded OpenOffice.org 2.0 Beta file
Executing the Installation Program
Running OpenOffice.org 2.0 Beta

Follow these instructions

The first thing you'll want to do is read through these instructions
completely, and use the OpenOffice.org site to answer any questions
you might have. The site contains documentation for users of all
levels, beginner to advanced; a good place to get started for all
new users of OpenOffice.org would be browsing the FAQ.

Check system requirements

Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 (Service Pack 2 or higher),
Windows XP, Windows 2003
128 Mbytes RAM
200 Mbytes available disk space
800 x 600 or higher resoluation with at least 256 colors

Java is required to use the new embedded Java technology based
HSQLDB database engine, and or make use of accessibility and
assistive technologies. If you do not require database tables or
accessibility integration, then you do not need to download and
install Java.

Java (JRE/JDK) may be downloaded from http://java.com depending on
your needs.

Download OpenOffice.org 2.0 Beta

To download OpenOffice.org from our website, you do not need to
login. Also, it does not cost anything other than what your costs
are to connect to the internet and download a large file.

To download the most current version of OpenOffice.org:

Display www.openoffice.org, and click on the "Download" link listed
under the "OpenOffice.org 2.0 Beta" heading near the top left of
the web page. This will display the OpenOffice.org 2.0 Beta
Downloads page http://download.openoffice.org/2.0beta/index.html

Do you see a blue box ? Inside the blue box, the first drop down
menu is prompting you to select your language. Click on the down
arrow to the left of this drop down menu and select your language
from the list.

For those languages where more than one mirror site is available
will be prompted to choose the operating system (platform).
"Windows" is at the top of the list.

Choose a mirror (download location) closest to you.

An interim page will be displayed with some information on how to
contribute to the project and how to locate other resources, and
seek support.

Click the "Continue to Download" button to proceed to download
OpenOffice.org to your computer. You will be prompted by a dialog
window as to where you want to place the download file on your
computer. Note this down, as you will need to find it later to
install OpenOffice.org on your computer.

Note: You may also want to copy the downloaded file to a backup
medium (CD-ROM, ZIP disk, et al.)

To check the integrity of the file that you have downloaded, please
refer to the instructions for getting and using Md5Sums.

Unzipping the downloaded OpenOffice.org 2.0 Beta file

Either using Windows Explorer or Mozilla/Netscape's Download
Manager, navigate to the OpenOffice.org file you downloaded.
Windows Explorer users will want to find the file and double-click
to launch the Installation program. Alternately, Mozilla/Netscape
users will want to open the Download Manager, highlight the file,
and click ?Launch File?. In either case, your unzip utility will
start if one is successfully installed on your system.

Executing the installation programme

Using the compression utility, extract all the files into a separate
directory on your hard drive. Once the files are decompressed,
navigate to the folder, find ?SETUP.EXE?, and double-click to
launch the OpenOffice.org installation program. Follow the prompts,
and OpenOffice.org will be installed on your system, ready for use.

Note. Depending on your install set you may be asked if you want
OpenOffice.org to be your default Office suite. If you answer "yes"
and then change your mind, returning to the prior state is tedious.
You need to reassociate all Office files.

Thank you for using OpenOffice.org, and welcome!

Quick-Start Guide, Windows in a Multiple User Environment

Login as Administrator.
Unpack the downloaded image into a directory.
Navigate to the directory with the unpacked files. This could be the
opened uncompressed folder.
Then execute "setup.exe".
Logout as Administrator.

This action will install OpenOffice.org in multi-user configuration.
Each user can then invoke OpenOffice.org from the program menu
which will configure itself as a workstation copy with no further
effort on the part of the user.

Linux RPM-based Installation

Prerequisites

If you want Java integration, you want to make sure you have the
latest JRE installed. It should be at least JRE 1.4. You can find
the JRE for Linux at the Java JRE for Linux download site.
Alternatively, it might be included on the installation media of
your distro as part of a complete Java development environment.

Installation Steps

Unpack the downloaded image into a directory. For example,Currently,
the following command would unpack into the current directory:

tar xvzf Ooo_1.9.m79_native_LinuxIntel_install.tar.gz

Su to root, if necessary.
cd into the directory with the unpacked image. This could be RPMS.
Delete any rpm files that do not apply to your system. For example,
on a Fedora Core 3 system, delete any rpms specific to another
distribution such as openofficeorg-suse-menus-1.9.79-1.noarch.rpm.
Then execute rpm -Uvih *rpm.

saludos,
Richard.
