On the tools-jdk list, we have been talking with Richard Stallman and some others about usage of Java in OOo. One of the items that is coming up is testing OOo on "free Java" platforms. Are there any volunteers here, to help test OOo on gcj, Kaffe, and by proxy ClassPath? We would need the tests to be conducted in several key areas, and build a list of tests that can be run as new versions are released.

Any help would be most appreciated in this area, as it would help promote OOo in the Open Source community.

I've tried to build but OOo tolds me I woudn't be able to build and it was right :-D

I've don't tested using gcj just as a run-time enviroment.

I've gcj and kaffe anc I can test it.

I've saw an message talking about what to do about FreeJava in OOo (I can't remember who, from OOo, had written it). Some points of the message was avoid using thigs of Java 1.4 (by Sun) and some things specifics to Sun's Java.

I could notice one of the biggest problems for building OOo with gcj was working with XML. I'm not used with java as XML parser, but I know at least Python has a parser for this. As we already need Python to build OOo this wouldn't bother a lot (except for having to do the programming job again).

I'm sure using more Python instead of Java will help to promote OOo.
