Yes, I remember this too and I tried it during OOo 1.1.4 release (as
testtool binary for windows is broken since 1.1.4). But it didn't work.
I've been told that this functionality was removed (mails might be somewhere
here in the lists archives).
Testtool documentation still states that "you can test each installation ...
in a LAN" but has no detailed info about this. (But ok, I can give it a try
.. as I'm interested if it still works).

Anway .. that was exactly my initial question: how to proceed? 
"Try to test  a remote installation." was a perfect hint.
