Never tried to insert it manually, but the clock-applet from the
smoketests opens fine, the fireworks from the smoketests work fine as
well.

Just tried to insert the clock-applet manually into impress and
writer,... with both OOo 1.1.5 and OOo 1.9m128:
No, it doesn't crash.
And yes, it works properly (but you have to set at least width and
height as parameters, otherwise you'll only see a grey rectangle)
One huge drawback though: In Impress it is only shown in editing mode,
not in the preview window on the left and not in the presentation (there
only the generic OLE-Icon is shown). In OOo 1.1.5 it is shown when
running the presentation, but not in the size defined in the parameters,
but with the size of the Ole-Object in OOo (the area surrounded with
green handles)

Yes. Tried Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw. All work fine With
JavaClock.class and witdh and height parameters.
No crash, no other problem (apart from the applet not being shown when
running the presentation)

Linux (Mandrake 9.0 based, gnome 2.12, j2sdk1.4.1_02 & jdk1.5.0_03, OOo
1.9m128 and OOo 1.1.5)

The MyGUI.class fromt the issue works fine as well, but again: You
have to set width and heigth parameters, otherwise you'll only see the
grey background.
The applet shows a selection-texbox with the entries "java", "javac",
"jar" and "applet", a button labled "I am a button", three checkboxes
("check1-3"), three radio buttons ("radio1-3")
HTH,
