Greetings from Finland,
I was encouraged to ask or comment issues to dev-list after I made a
private question off the dev-list.
This is a lenghty message - so be patient.
First I describe one issue in a detailed way.
Then I separate two more specific issues: A, B.
Then I make specific question related to that issue B.
Finally I am asking some explanations for the current solution
(2.0.4. RC 2) in issue B.
SO - I have been working with RTF document format since that has been
my main document format since 1999. I have added some test
information to RTF related issues 35217, 39540, 46917, 49087, 53816,
59345, 55911, 60831, 63306, 67292 and 68385 from tests with OO
production version 2.0.3 (Finnish version).
I changed my testing activities to OO 2.0.4 RC 2 (English version)
few days ago (20th September).
Now I have an user interface related question since I understood one
issue better when there was something in English.
(Well - basicly one part of test case description was unclear even in
English...)
This message covers some thoughts when I was creating a new ODT/RTF
converting/exporting test based on issue 67292.
0. Install OO 2.0.4 RC 2 - no changes to anything.
Then you can go through following procedure with OO Writer
1. New document (Ctrl+N)
2. Select INSERT => Header => Default
3. Add text to header
4. Add lots of enters to the main text area, so that there is two (2)
pages in the document
There you have it:
Page 1: the header is visible
Page 2: the header NOT visible
5. Add lots of enters to the main text area, so that there is four
(4) pages in the document
There you have it:
Page 3: the header is visible
Page 4: the header NOT visible
I have been testing this issue 67292 and first I thought that is was
related to importing to the importing of RTF documents.
NOW I have isolated this into the two separated things:
A: IMPORTING of RTF documents with headers - that has been main focus
in issue 67292.
B: CREATING headers in OpenOffice - it is a new issue
You can continue the procedure to get headers visible in every page.
6. FORMAT => Page => Header => Same content left/right (mark as selected)
And there you have it:
Page 1: the header VISIBLE
Page 2: the header VISIBLE
Page 3: the header VISIBLE
Page 4: the header VISIBLE
- Great - is issue 67292 now solved ??
It seems to be so, since you can continue the procedure.
7. Save as ODT
8. Save as RTF
9. Close document
10. Open saved RTF in other program
And there you have it:
All headers were visible in RTF, tested in Word 2002.
- Great - is issue 67292 now solved ??
WELL, WELL, WELL, WELL, WELL, WELL - it is not a bug - it is a FEATURE.
I think this is a usability issues now - specificly I mean the point
B - CREATING headers in OpenOffice.
WHO has required that "Same content left/right" is after installation
by default NOT marked as selected?
WHY this is done -I would like to have a good explanation...
IS IT BASED on user demands?
IS IT BASED on some standard?
WHAT are usability experts saying about this - where you can check
their opinion ?
IS THERE some usability test results users doing that "Same content
left/right" selection?
WHAT are programmeres saying about this - where you can check their opinion ?
WHAT are testers saying about this - where you can check their opinion ?
IS IT really a requirement?
WHAT is a general expectation of users for header behaviour when they
start working with a new document?
WHERE IS general expectation of users for header behaviour documented?
I understand that represent just one opinion - and my opinion is
(very) biased of course.
I have been spending some hours on this issue 67292 and would like to
have more clarification to this new user interface related issue B.
SURE - I can add it as an enchancement request to the Issuezilla
database, but first I would like to have some additional information.
Thank your answers beforehands,
Jukka Rannila
