[snip long set of commands]

Wouldn't it be much easier and simpler (not to mention quicker and less
error-prone) to simply download VMware Server 1.0.1? The entire creation of a
suitable virtual machine takes approximately 5 minutes from the VMware Server
console....

To create the same image:

1. Start VMware.
2. Click "Create new Virtual Machine"
3. Next
4. Next
5. Select "Linux" radio button, select suitable distro from drop-down. Next
6. Next
7. this will depend on of pr how you've set up the virtual networking. For me
it is "Bridged". Next
8. Finish

Wait while the disk file is created - it can take a minute two

Now click on the "Edit Virtual Machine Settings" button.
9. click "Add" and select "CD/DVD"
10. click "Use ISO Image" radio button, Next.
11. Insert absolute path to the downloaded image in text box, Finish, OK.
12. Click "Power on this virtual machine".

When the virtual POST scree appears, click in it and then press F2 (make sure
the progress bar is showing first).

Use the arrow keys to select the Boot menu, arrange things so that the Hard
drive is at the top, then the CD-ROM, then Removable devices (this step is
probably not really needed, but...). F10, Enter.

Now the standard installer will start, just proceed as for a normal install.

This will work with any downloaded ISO image, whether it be a Linux distro, a
*BSD, Solaris (Intel) or any version of Windows (Including Vista).

Make sure you install VMware tools once the OS is up and running (I still have
to find out how to do that under Solaris :) ).
