and - I have done QA for all platforms except Solaris Sparc.
To keep these environment handy, vmware is extremely useful.
If some problem occur in some specific test, we can easily verify with it.

and - OOo qatesttool requires a very small CPU time (~6%)
we can run two sessions for example to do automate tests.
We can test two platform (or two packages) at the same time.
this also reduces the cost considerably.

Of course, this is an option or suggestion. What should be done
is decided by NL-leads etc.
