I confirm the effects are nearly invisible for colored (I tried red) text. Automatic for me is rendered the same as black, and works. PDF export does not change anything for red text in my case. Possible related issue: http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=25295 (mentions how the black text is actually internally turned into white, and indeed the letters are white with black shadows when the effect works).
