The posting in this list, "OOo-Dev 3.x Developer Snapshot build DEV300m86 available", http://qa.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=dev&msgNo=13528 , refers to http://download.openoffice.org/next . That page offers two downloads. I picked the first one because it appears to be more recent. So far, so good. I unzip and untar the archive and find the "update" script. I run that as the Superuser. Here's a copy of the output up through what appears to be the first error message:
