Hi Carl, ive added a new heavier version of the logo here:

I tried it out on the website by modifying it locally, Id say it looks better
than what is there. Be sure to change the image size in the html though if you
use it, its 185x69 now.
I started it from scratch and made it up using a couple of different fonts and
a bit of manual moving and pruning (gimps text capabilities are awful :P), so
its not quite the same but I think it works nicer this way, the exact same
style didn’t really work with the heavy text. I tried feathering it, but
gimps idea of feathering is pretty much just using a tapered translucency and
it certainly didn’t look like the Apache logos text, which is somewhat
reminiscent of resizing artifacts hehe. I don’t really know what else to try
in that respect, so if someone else wants a shot ill turn over the original
gimp xcf file and they can have a bash. I think it looks nice the way it is
though :)

I'll have a look at it later in the week, times a bit tight for the next couple
days, and i'll have to do the logo from scratch if I am changing the font etc,
plus figure out how to feather text in gimp :)
I think the other main thing to decide is how wide it should be (relative to
height), and I can aim for that size with the original rather than resizing it
afterwards. With the sizes being imposed on it by the page at the moment its
currently being made around 75% wider than it was originally meant to.

having placed one logo on our web site, I think if we make the font a bit
heaver, and then feather the text, QED with gimp. That should make it look a
bit better.
For example see how the ASF logo text has been feathered.
