Binary values were decoded as a read-only copy of the source buffer, which for a read-only Netty buffer is a retained slice. A small binary such as the message properties user-id then kept the whole pooled read buffer alive until the Binary was garbage collected. Since Netty direct memory usage does not trigger GC, receivers could run out of direct memory while the heap was far from full.
