As mentioned on dev list, the behaviour that these commits remove in the Perl
binding is actually required by a user (who contributed that logic). More
generally I think more thought needs to go into the solution. I'm requesting
that the two commits above be reverted and a solution proposed that allows for
sending binary encoded data if required.
