Looks good to me. I very much appreciate the work you've done on this.
Not a big deal, but I personally wouldn't add directory_exists. The function
is_dir conventionally means "it exists and it's a directory", just as "test -d"
behaves in shells (that is, it returns false rather than complaining about an
invalid path).
