* pthreads is not available on Windows, or maybe just pthread_self is not 
available
* some other threading library needs to be used;
** either a wrapper to use pthreads on unix, and whatever Windows uses on 
windows,
** or the threads.h in C11, if msvc supports that
** or write the test in cpp and use thread support from c++11
