Using the new client API from 0.9 would let us use the SSL support that was
added, which in turn would allow Quarks applications to integrate with cloud
Kafka services like Message Hub on Bluemix.
The downside of switching to 0.9 clients is that they are not compatible with
0.8 servers, so you lose compatibility with the version of Kafka server that
most people are running. It's not easy to keep both clients and abstract this
away from the developer since 0.8 clients require different user-defined
properties than 0.9 clients, and there is not a direct matching.
That being said, since Quarks is so young, it might make sense to put our eggs
in the Kafka 0.9 basket? I'm curious how much interest we have as a community
in a set of 0.9 Kafka clients.
