It is now highly probable that it is JDK specific. I've logged 1863 consecutive successful runs with the Sun JRE, which would be highly improbable if it failed about once every 250 runs, as suggested by the OpenJDK results.

The next question is whether it is a River bug that happens to only show up with one JRE, or is a bug in the JRE.

Based on my analysis, I suspect the latter, in which case I should close the JIRA and go on to something else.

I realized I made a mistake when I had to reboot the VirtualBox, and the
second failure was also with the OpenJDK Client VM. I'm rerunning the
test now, but it is one failure every few hours.

I've now collected over 24 hours of continuous running, over 1000 runs,
with the Sun JVM, without a single failure. Could it be an OpenJDK issue
rather than a River issue?
