It was probably because of restricted ports in firewall  (derby).  Tomcat  is 
not checking a firewall as apache.

I don't understand why there would be any difference accessing Roller via 
Tomcat or indirectly through Apache. Sounds like a HTTPD/Tomcat configuration 
problem. Is there something different about the database configuration when you 
run through Apache?
