4.0 should be almost identical to 3.1 as far as auth and auth goes. 4.1 is a world apart with totally pluggable user, role and permissions management, the ability to configure role names and the option to use CMA and thus Glassfish SSO, Sun Access Manager SSO, OpenSSO etc. instead of Acegi. - Dave
