Found some fundamental issues which will necessitate another build.

Did some basic tests with RC1
- All packages downloaded and sigs verified ok.

- Installed 4.0.1 RC1 from scratch with installation.type=auto. Went through the initial installation of a user, blog, front page. This worked fine.

- Stopper. The fix for https://issues.apache.org/roller/browse/ROL-1766 (i.e. https://svn.apache.org/viewvc?view=rev&revision=668737) wasn't integrated to 4.0 branch. I guess I was expecting you to integrate that over before building. Sorry for the miscommunication. I have now integrated it to the roller_4.0 branch as http://svn.apache.org/viewvc?rev=729448&view=rev

- Additional issue. Tried the webapp pointed to an unmodified working Roller 4.0 database. Visiting the site, I get IllegalStateException complaining the weblogger isn't bootstapped. I noticed that the database.version value in the roller_properties table in the 4.0.1 db created from scratch is 401. Modified the database.versionvalue in my 4.0 database to 401 and restarted. This worked. We either need to include upgrade instructions that mention this or we need to change the expected db version to 400. Ideally you we should be able to drop the new webapp in without touching the db; the required mod is probably minor enough to be tolerable, but if it is easy to this (I don't know), let's fix in the next RC.

If you want, you can wait for more comments from others before rolling a second RC.

It's been about a year now since the 4.0 release and we've fixed a
fair number of minor bugs in the Roller 4.0 branch, including a
security vulnerability. The full list of fixes made is here

I'd like to propose that we make a release from the 4.0 branch and I
have prepared a Release Candidate build here:

    http://people.apache.org/~snoopdave/apache-roller-4.0.1

The build was made from the current 4.0 branch and compiled with Java 1.5.0_16.

If you want to help out, please download the build install it and let
us know if it looks good.

Vote +1 for release or vote -1 and provide a list of specific reasons
why the RC should not be released as 4.0.1. If we get any -1 votes,
we'll figure out how to address them, create RC2 and call for another
vote... and so on until we have a 4.0.1 release (or I give up in
frustration ;-)
