Interesting! I've never thought of using abstract in that way. I agree with
your conclusion about classes with only static methods. When I see that a class
is abstract, my first thought is that it is meant to be subclassed specifically
so that it can be instantiated. I guess you could also make it final, but
that's still potentially confusing.
I was actually considering private constructors as a potential future
enhancement. It would allow developers to prevent static-method-only classes
from being instantiated, and it would enable a less-hacky way to implement the
singleton pattern.

Agreed. I'd like to see a page that lists all new language syntax/features in
one place, with links to individual pages for each one that goes into more
detail about how to use them and what limitations they have.
That being said, in some cases, we could add runtime checks too.
For instance, with abstract classes, we could add some kind of runtime check to
the beginning of the constructor. I've done it like this before:
if(Object(this).constructor == MyAbstractClass)
{
throw new Error("MyAbstractClass is abstract and must be subclassed.");
}
That could easily become a new function in Language.as.
