Subject: What is Merlin in XML Signature

My question may look very silly. I was going through Apache Santuario
samples and I found two samples which says MerlinsExampleSixteen and
MerlinsExampleTwentyThree. What does it Merlin's Example 16 or 23 mean?
Where can I find internal / external documentation for it?

Thanks.
