My name is James Stevenson, and I'm contacting you regarding
participation in the "Summer of Code" mentoring program offered by
Google. Specifically, I'm interested in enhancing the csv import
features; I frequently use plain text formats to import data, and
understand how important both usability and flexibility is in these kind
of tasks. I would like to know more details on this project, and how I
can best be of assistance, before I apply. Please let me know if you
would be willing to mentor me in this project; I'm very self directed,
but also understand the importance good organization in software design
and want to make sure the enhancements I design fit well into the
development plans for this portion of OpenOffice.
I am a computer science student at Brigham Young University in my senior
year, and will be starting graduate work soon. My cumulative GPA is
3.85. I've been employed for the past year as an intern at IBM
developing applications with Lotus Notes and maintaining a department
Domino server. I work from home, and so am used to self-driven
development from home. I have a special interest in designing good,
/usable/ software. The software I develop is in use by about 200 people,
and directly helps them support large clients such as American Express.
Starting from 1999, I've had jobs designing internet applications using
Perl and MySQL, including a summer extensively modifying the Slashdot
template for use by Alaskan parents and educators. I'm attaching my
resume if you would like more details on my qualifications.
