File format is the bigger issue of the two, with OASIS involved and all. We don't have a procedure in place yet for post-2.0 file format extensions, but once we do this should be rather painless, as it's just a single additional setting.
If yes, perhaps do you think this is something we, as the community developers, can go ahead and take care of, with your hint on where to make changes? I know it's already too late for 2.0 (obviously), but we could at least start some work on making the patch ready for integration with all the points covered (i.e. the feature, the API, and the file format).
Also, someone from User Experience should take a look and approve the specification. I'm cc'ing Falko for this.
