Dear Prof. Neuwirth,

thank you for the hint. Indeed, I overlooked the article.

While Springer journals are usually restricted, I could access the article (and have read it in the meantime). (Though I have access to many Springer journals, I believe this one is actually free.)

The article discusses most issues I mentioned (and those in greater depth). Mainly three issues remained uncovered: a.) converting input data/vectors to factors (is useful sometimes), b.) importing data as matrices (for contingency tables, e.g. for a Fisher exact test) and c.) converting a data range to multiple vectors vs independently selecting the data ranges for the multiple vectors. The article is a very good and extensive starting point, though.

My comments were actually intended to offer Mr Gryc some help and insight into building a connection between R and Calc. I really hope he joins this project.

Dear Mr Gryc,

I hope this information is indeed useful. The article discusses many relevant topics for this integration, therefore I definitely recommend it reading. If you haven't yet subscribed to the [email protected] mailing list, please feel free to do so. Useful information gets often posted on the mailing lists. As a subscriber to the mailing list, you will receive every information posted there. (I do receive that information, too, when posted to [EMAIL PROTECTED])

I will have some thoughts during the weekend for some remaining issues. Feel free to ask any further questions. I will try to answer any open questions regarding statistics (even if it may take a couple of days before I answer).

Kind regards,

Leonard Mada

leonardo,
you might want to have a look at the work of thomas baier and me
integrating R into Excel (and any other DCOM client in windows).

a recently published paper (in computatuinal statistics) is available at
http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00180-007-0023-6

(restricted access, i know, but i can send you a personal copy)
i think we have adressed a lot of issues of embedding R into a spreadsheet.

Dear Mr. Mada:

Thank you very much for your advice and help. I've worked with R quite a bit, and have also used various ways to connect it to my own statistical software, so I hope that'll provide me with a starting point. I'm currently familiarizing myself with the OpenOffice SDK now, as this is probably what I need to learn most about before I have a strong application.

I'm keeping your e-mails and will be making reference to them in the next few days and weeks, so please feel free to write more if you want. That being said, I know you're busy, so take your time. I'll send a short update soon, either informally through e-mail or formally as an Summer of Code application.

Thank you,
Wojciech
