Hi Thomas,

Of course, there's a workaround. First insert a new empty column
at the desired position, then drag & drop the column to the new
position and finally delete the old column. As this method is quite
cumbersome, the question is, if the described action can be performed
in a more user friendly way. In addition one may not want to restrict
to columns and rows only, but generalise the method to cell ranges.

When discussing an improvement of D&D in Calc you may want to have a look at issue 60286, that also deals with this topic.

In addition please have a look at this screenshot
http://stefanw.googlegroups.com/web/AdvancedDDinXL.png (Sorry only in german) It shows the competitor“s solution for advanced D&D. The example shows the following situation:

Column B has been selected. Column B has been dragged using the secondary (right) mouse button. It has been dragged over column D. The secondary (right) mouse button has just been released. You can see the context menu allowing the user to decide what should be done:

 - move (overwrite column D)
 - copy (overwrite column D)
 - copy values only
 - copy formats only
 - link
 - copy and insert
 - move and insert
