I saw in January that the number of columns in Calc was increased from 2^8 or 256 (same as Excel versions prior 2007) to 2^10 or 1024.

I have even seen a few web sites mentioning that this is a nice new feature that will be in OOo 3.0.

However it is my understanding Excel 2007 supports 2^14 or 16,384 columns. The number of columns Cal supports still matches 2^16 or 65,536 (same as Excel versions prior to 2007).

So my question is why was there this small increment in the number of columns in Calc if the current version already supported the same numbers as Excel prior to Excel 2007 yet the increment did not make the jump to match to what Excel 2007 does?

It almost seems like a waste of effort to jump to 1024 columns. I was curious what was the reasoning behind this push. I went though some of mailing lists and bugs but could not find it.

I assume if we don't see mention at this point chances are slim to none that we will see 2^14 or 16,384 columns and 2^20 or 1,048,576 rows in OOo 3.0?

I do appreciate everyone's time and hard work on OOo and Calc.

Alan
