Let's ask a simple question:

When does a spreadsheet user insert a number as text?
How are these string-numbers generated?
What is their purpose inside a spreadsheet?
I invite everyone to think about these questions. I will detail my
experience in the next post. As these are not trivial questions - but
with very far reaching consequences - it might help to analyse real
users and how they behave/interact with the spreadsheet.
I cannot hide my disappointment that no one did try to answer these
questions. More generally, I did address recently some important issues
on the UX-list, but no one has tried to respond. (I think about
RGB/CMYK, TAGS, UX-literature and some other.)
I will try a 2nd time and will give you some hints: users are confronted
with textual-input primarily under 2 conditions.
One is well captured in *today's posted* issue 88908.

I invite everyone to rethink the general problem and devise a better
solution to this problem.
