I am attaching a patch that does the following:
a) on methods that use the adapter nul check.
b) initialization of the adapter if null
c) rename the afterPropertiesSet to createAdapter (to avoid confusion)
d) Update the unit test so that it does not invoke afterPropertiesSet (its not
going to work that way in the real world).
