256 MB sounds like a fair value to me as well. Once it's added to Karaf, we probably won't have to do anything in ServiceMix once we can pick up a new version, so that sounds even better ;) I'll raise the JIRA for ServiceMix 5 anyway so we can at least keep track of it. Also, good to hear about the new Metaspace memory for Java 8. I do wonder how this will affect production systems: most people will probably want to leave the default setting to "unbounded", but I can imagine some users will want to limit the amount of metaspace that can be used so we might have to do the opposite for Java 8 and provide a new environment variable in the Karaf scripts to limit this again.
