FYI. Would be great if users from the ServiceMix community could assist me in helping Gartner understand the value proposition behind open source. Please drop me a note if you have any additional insight... -----Original Message-----

up on this issue. I believe that we at
Gartner should treat ServiceMix in exactly the same way that we treat any other
ESB product – documenting its strengths, limitations and areas of applicability
to the best of our ability. That means including ServiceMix in all reports
and presentations that discuss ESBs, with the same attention as we would apply
to IBM WebSphere ESB, Microsoft WCF, Sonic ESB, Cape Clear 6,
etc. To accomplish this, I
need to be able to check references from people who are using the software and
are in a position to knowledgeably and fairly discuss the product. I will follow
up with you (Jim) personally, but I would also ask the
following: 1. If there are
other people on this mailing list who have worked with ServiceMix, ideally with
a production application but not absolutely necessary given the young age of the
software, can you respond directly to me (just send an email reply to this
message). I would like to do a 30 minute conference call to debrief you on
your experience. It is best if I am able to refer to the name of your
company as a source, although as a fallback, we can have the discussion on a
confidential basis (sometimes it is an onerous task to get approval from your PR
folks to have public mention of your use of the
software). 2. If you have a
production application that is particularly illuminating as an example of ESB
usage and ServiceMix usage, and if you are willing to go public with your work
as a case study, let me know that too. I produce case studies from time to
time and I can host a case study guest speaker at the Gartner App Integration
and Web Services conference in June if we can find a suitable
example. Regarding the Garther
vendor positioning chart (“Quadrant”): We are just beginning work on the 2006
version of this. I would be glad to include ServiceMix if I can get enough
information (see above). Until we do the analysis, I cannot make any
predictions about where ServiceMix would appear on the chart. ObjectWeb,
JBOSS and other open source products have appeared on Gartner positioning charts
in the past (see enclosed), and JBOSS made it into the leader’s quadrant of this
particular example. We have not have open source ESBs on the “integration
backbone” chart (that covers ESBs and Integration Suites) in the past, but
frankly, I ascribe this entirely to the young age of the software. We
can’t put something on our chart until it has a real impact on the lives of our
clients. I will do everything I can to ensure objective
treatment. Thanks for any help you
can provide. Cheers Roy

Gartner Application
Integration and Web Services Conference: 19th to
21st of June 2006, From:
I
wanted to thank you for taking time to explain the Gartner perspective on
Enterprise Service Bus. I am of the belief that I have the following action
items: 1.
I am currently working on getting ServiceMix to be certified on the Azul
platform. The notion of it being literally the first ESB that has been certified
to run on 384 CPUs is powerful. 2.
I will make sure that over the next couple of weeks that several individuals
that have deployed ServiceMix to a production environment directly contact you
to describe their perspectives and experiences in this space. I am cc:ing the
ServiceMix development list on the chance there are users that I may not be
aware of. 3.
I have been thinking about ServiceMix showing up in the visionary quadrant as
intriguing but insufficient. With this thought in mind, I have managed to not
only get many of my peers interested in contributing but have talked with
architects at other Fortune 100 enterprises including but not limited to:
4.
If you have opportunities at upcoming conferences where members of the open
source community can share their development experiences with ServiceMix, please
do not hesitate to drop the list a note. Cheers
