Thanks for the pointers.  I have not tried either XAL or XAP myself, but
would be really interested in hearing about people's experiences.  I'd also
definitely be interested in examples we could publish in the sandbox.

Regarding the general use of "declarative UI" languages like these with
Shale, there are (at least) a couple of approaches to consider:

* Attempt to wrap the "widgets" provided by the declarative
 language in JSF components that output markup conforming
 to the declarative language, which later gets interpreted
 somehow and converted into HTML or whatever.

* Skip the use of JSF's UI components, and just using
 Shale for its back end services.  You can still leverage things
 like the remoting, view controller, and dialog manager features,
 even if you are not using JSF to create the markup for you.

I suspect that, for any given language, the second approach will be easier
than the first, but it is worth looking at both styles.
