Yes, a pure Java version is something we would like to do. I'm not
familiar with the GeoWebCache internal. But about GDAL, I think we can
limit its usage to some image formats that are hard to support (for now)
in pure Java, especially JPEG2000. Most other formats (GeoTIFF, JPEG,
PNG, RAW, NetCDF, etc.) work well in Java.
