I agree that opting-servlet should be an exception and not the rule. However I
think it could be valuable were the resolution mechanisms can't be used. As
such it should be a usable as a generic fallback mechanisms, as such it can
also be a functional replacement for regex-paths as described here:

I think having to work around this limitation as you describe makes thing more
and not less complicated.
