thanks Marius, the patch looks good.
The only thing I'm not sure is the removal of the transport API as the
originating rationale was that it was good to have a pluggable transport (with
pluggable authentication) so that one could for example add other ways of
authenticating over HTTP besides simple user/password (e.g. certificate &
others).
