It could, but there's also many templating libraries out there, and it
might take a while for Sightly to capture enough mindshare to be at
that level.

Right now it looks like only Sling users are using Sightly, so IMO
having the current implementation managed by this community makes
sense. Sightly can always move elsewhere later if it starts growing
its own wings, the Apache license doesn't prevent that.

And that "elsewhere" can also be an independent Apache Sightly project
which would be easy to handle if a big enough community arises - but
for now I don't think it has enough momentum for that.
