Is this just me or does this seem like its being done in haste?

There was valid (from what I interpreted as rather severe) concerns
raised about one of the fixes included here that were not seemingly
addressed:

it seems like something this should be resolved among the development
team before performing a release...
(If resolved offline, then fine I suppose, but that defeats the
purpose of the JIRA and email "paper trails" for public visibility)
