I was struggling a bit with back porting to branch_9x, and talked to Jason G 
who reminded me that the deprecation policy is that breaking changes to 9x need 
to wait till 10 unless there are other strong reasons for it (and community buy 
in).  

So it makes sense to make these changes just on main, and if, in the future we 
think there is enough value for back porting to a future 9X release, even 
though parameters to the bin/solr scripts will have changed, then we could do 
that at that point….

I think I’ve got everything merged cleanly, and will keep an eye on the Jenkins 
builds.
