------- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2004-11-22 09:04 -------
I have seen a few instances where spamd spawned 100's of child processes until
the system (SGI Irix 6.5.22) wasn't able to create new processes. This tends
to happen when I run fetchmail to bring in a batch of messages from an address
that is in the ghostscript distro (e.g., attracts lots of spam and virus mails).
While this is happening DNS queries (made other machines) often fail, so my
feeling is that a batch of spam/virus emails will cause a lot of queries for
"new" sites (e.g., not in some cache) and bog down the DNS. I use procmail,
and I'm not entirely sure where DNS queries occur. Maybe there should
be separate queues for messages with headers that have addresses not in the
cache
so these can be fed thru at a rate that doesn't result in DOS.
