This tends to happen when I run fetchmail to bring in a batch of messages from an address that is in the ghostscript distro (e.g., attracts lots of spam and virus mails). While this is happening DNS queries (made other machines) often fail, so my feeling is that a batch of spam/virus emails will cause a lot of queries for "new" sites (e.g., not in some cache) and bog down the DNS. I use procmail, and I'm not entirely sure where DNS queries occur.
