ok, I think I have it.  they are definitely two different issues.

Alexander -- your one is due to /dev/console somehow being given permissions
that do not give the spamd child perms to write to it. syslog() tries to write
to it, fails, and exits.  I think 

Helge -- your bug is different, and I think it's a platform signal handling
issue -- SIGPIPE has been reset to SIG_DFL, whereas it should be generally set
to SIG_IGN.   the following patch is better at ensuring SIGPIPE is set correctly
throughout the spamd's lifetime; could you try with that and see if it helps?
