this is definitely related to bug 3897. I think this is more correct, but I
also think there may be two bugs on that platform from the underlying perl bug
-- so IMO both should be applied.
could the people reporting this bug please try out an svn snapshot post
r167851... that contains *both* fixes and I want to make sure it works on BSDs
before we release 3.1.0.
