help? "error: spamd: unable to determine home directory for user"

i've:

        spamd -V
        SpamAssassin Server version 3.2.0-r232569
          running on Perl 5.8.7
          with SSL support (IO::Socket::SSL 0.97)

ons OSX 10.4.2

when i launch spamd:

        spamd \
        --debug --daemonize \
        --allow-tell \
        --siteconfigpath=/var/Data/SpamAssasin \
        --configpath=/var/Settings/SpamAssasin \
        --username=maildaemon \
        --nouser-config


it fails with error:

        [1048] dbg: logger: adding facilities: all
        [1048] dbg: logger: logging level is DBG
        [1048] dbg: logger: successfully opened file /var/log/spamd.log
        [1048] dbg: logger: successfully added file method
        [1048] error: spamd: unable to determine home directory for user 
'maildaemon'

i find next to nothing on googling:

        spamd "unable to determine home directory"


any suggestions?
