FWIW, running 3.1.1 or latest svn with $copy_config_p set back to 1 has caused this problem to resurface on rh7.3 boxes with perl 5.6.1. i've seen a handful of boxes in the last 2 days with full disks due to this. i've never seen it occur on fc3 with perl 5.8.5. i thought the recent updates related to bug 4696 may have helped, but it doesnt appear so.
