You've convinced me... I wasn't really thinking clearly about it. The
fact that I had to add a trusted_networks 127.0.0.1 when I added
addresses for another ISP that I have a forwarding alias with should not
  have been a surprise if I thought of it this way: If you are have a
mail alias that forwards from another mail service to your primary one,
add to your user_prefs the trusted_network configurations that would be
required at their site. Since that includes 127.0.0.1 in my case, I
should add it, and that works regardless of whether my ISP has or has
not had to put trusted_networks 127.0.0.1 in their local.cf as long as
they have done the right thing and defined explicit trusted_networks.
