Or because perl was installed into a directory containing spaces. Since then I've reinstalled (both perl and SA). Using 3.1.7 and having updated with sa-update, spamassassin is finding my local and site rules just fine without any switches needed. This is with no spaces in any directories. So in a normal case everything seems to be working just fine.
