It will always require one character other than 'a' before the 'cm', which may or may not be what you mean. The original \S* can occur zero times so I guess you're trying to match on hostnames like "cm-12-34-56-78.bigisp.com" ? In that case I'm sure you all know zero-width negative lookbehinds off by heart so excuse me for teaching relatives :-).
