unfortunately, fast access to single files is definitely not S3's strong point;
there's a lot of latency, both in the TCP/HTTP layers and on Amazon's systems.

like a SAN?  I agree it'd be best, but I don't know if that'll be practical;
it'd limit the possible networking options to just a LAN-based setup, and I'm
not sure if we'd have access to sufficient donated CPU power in this
configuration. :(
