Some way to maintain backwards compatibility pretty much is necessary. Always, unless it is a critical fix and compatibility turns out to be almost impossible to achieve. An admin (not user) option actually doesn't sound that bad to me. No performance penalty, and invalidating the AWL DB is at the admin's discretion. There is, however, the downside of existing DBs possibly becoming invalid at any point (per user AWL), which would need to be handled, too. Also keep in mind that AWL is disabled by default in 3.3.
