I just tested with SA v3.3.0rc1, Solaris 10 Sparc, Perl 5.10.1:

spam5# uname -a
SunOS spam5 5.10 Generic_141444-09 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-V240
spam5# spamd -V
SpamAssassin Server version 3.3.0-rc1
  running on Perl 5.10.1
  with zlib support (Compress::Zlib 2.02)

It takes an average of 1.8 times as long to scan a message if I don't use the
"use bytes" kludge.

Can anybody tell me why it is taking so long, and if there is another way to
speed it up? What am I missing when I use the "use bytes" kludge?
